October 2012 ABDX CME Journal

Vol 7 Issue 1

Editors Corner:

ABDX membership is 304 members strong. At the last CME ABDX had 274 members.

ABDX recently had the tube radio and ultralite CME. The CME ran from 4 Oct to 15 Oct. I hope you all had some fun with this CME.

To the august body here assembled:

ABDX announces a CME which consists of the biggest and most energy consuming radios and the smallest least energy consuming radios, tube radios aka boat anchors and ultralights aka pocket radios. If it has a firebottle or can fit in a coat pocket this is the CME for those radios. This CME will run from 0000 4 October to 2359 15 October.

This is the beginning of the new DX season and we are looking for logs on any band as long as its broadcast radio. I am sure to get lots of logs on MW but would really, really, really like to get some HF (SW) logs as well. TV and FM logs are wanted also. Send it in no matter what you hear or see.

This is the site to join ABDX. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ABDX/

To join ABDX by mail here’s where to send the mail:

The ABDX Journal is available to all at no cost. Please pass it around to your DXing friends and also post it on other lists as well. You can get your copy of the journal at www.abdx.org

Radio and Antenna As Listed

Since I jumped the gun the other day on the October CME, and since I couldn't sleep last night, I logged the following on the morning of Thursday, October 4th.

WWCR, Nashville, TN, around 3 MHz  at 4:00 A. M. EDT, TOH ID.

WWRB, Manchester, TN, around 3 MHz with TOH ID interrupting Brother Stair (you know, from W-A-L-T-E-R-B-O-R-O, South Carolina,) at 4:04 A. M. EDT.

WWV, Fort Collins, CO, 2.5 MHZ with time signal at 4:05 A. M. EDT.

The radio used was a Philco model 41-220, a six tube set (including rectifier) using the built in loop.  It was tuned to the "Police Band" which I've heard called the tropical band.

Listening now (October 7 - 9:50 P.M. EDT) on a tube radio, a GE, AM/FM, Model T238A, tuned to 680, the Sunday Hall of Fame, from WPTF, Raleigh.  Not listening just for DX, this boomer tries not to miss this program every Sunday night.  It will be on until 1:00 A. M. EDT Monday morning, and I intend to hear all of it.

Tonight, October 15 at 7:00 P. M., EDT, I heard WKVL, 850, Knoxville, TN, on my RCA B-411 tube portable.  Interestingly, I thought I was hearing a pattern change after the TOH ID, because the volume was reduced by about half, then poof, the station was gone.  When I looked it up, I found out it was a daytime station.  There was no sign off announcement.  They just went away which I think is rather unusual.

TOH ID at 10:00 P. M. EDT, KRMG, 740, Tulsa, OK.

Oct. 4 Received on a 6 Tube GE Model 226 In Laurens SC:

Verified on Halicrafters SX-99

740 CFZM with a SINPO of 64585

Now moved Upstairs and listening to CFZM 740 on Halicrafters S-40B with 100' Longwire in a Pine Tree.

My Idea of an "Ultralight" is a 5-Tube "All American 5" AC/DC set :-)

Oct. 7 This Evening, we had a bit of Tropo rolling in from the East and Southeast.

Received on a Dynaco Dynakit FM-2 with the Optional Multiplex FM Stereo Board and Mod Squad Mods. Antenna is Home Brew 1/2 Wave Dipole.

95.1 WSSX with QRM from WAPE

98.3 WGCO

98.7 WYKZ

101.3 WWDM

102.7 WPUB

103.5 WEZL

106.1 UN ID Spanish

107.9 WXYY

Oct 15 Tonight at 7PM, I heard WQUL 1510 do this as well. I was listening on an Ultra-Light Marathon ETFR, so that makes it an Ultralight CME Log :-)

Starions that have an FM Translator tend to just run the Legal ID as required and drop the AM Carrier.and pretend to be an FM.

Right now I am testing the Marathon Emergency Task Force Radio (EFTR) for a Broadcast Engineering Magazine I write for and listening to Chine Radio International on 9.610 on it…. Amazing performance for a Radio smaller than a Pack of Smokes.

I decided to try out 740 at 1;30 PM and got CFZM on my Marathon ETFR and confirmed on my GE 226 Tube set.

Sony SRF-M37W and Tecsun PL-398MP for speakers

All of the logs below were done on Oct 15, 2012.

Times are 24-hour format, local (Pacific Daylight) time.

PL398mp signal is as indicated on the PL-398mp ("dBu" / dB S/N).  (On some weak / varying signals, the actual indication was nowhere near constant, especially at night.  N/A indicates no even approximate reading due to, for example, co-channel interference or adjacent-channel splatter.)  The Tecsun was only used as a signal strength indicator ; all reception was achieved with the Sony SRF-M37W (with a modified AM IF filter).

The SAT (Select-A-Tenna) Used will only be noted if it was necessary to hear the station.  COL and Comments are kept under the same heading, separated by a pipe ("|") due to not wanting a ton of space after some short COLs.

I had hoped to do a domestic log on my Zenith 500H and 500H-1, as they are

coatpocket sized and should qualify as ultralights, but there just wasn't time.

Today - October 16, 2012 - with the CME over, my goodies from Fair radio and

other sources have finally arrived, paving the way for a refit of the R-390A

including: new microswitch, replacing the twinax connector [or alternatively,

creating a new antenna input module], along with the annual cleaning and lube

touch-up of the gear train and a few other tweaks and adjustments. I wonder

when I'll get 'round to it.

Finally got some Maha Imedion D cells for the Satellite 800 so it is working

again [its separate AC supply is useless due to hum so its a battery only

radio]. I kind of enjoy using this big plastic box designed by Drake and made

in China by people who mostly knew how to build a radio. Mostly, but not

completely.

Put a battery pack in the RCA Strato-World I received yesterday - so far, I find

it quite a bit better a performer than either of my tube ZTOs - H500 and B600.
